More troubles in the mines...

Mas problemas en las minas de Chile. Just when they thought their troubles were over, the Chilean miners lose 2 members in a big blast. It apparently happend not far from where the miners were trapped. I feel sorry that they have to endure another bad run at the mines. Hopefully they will do something to where it won't be quite as dangerous in the future. Miners

Day of the Dead

Dia de los Muertos era esta semana. There were many things set up on campus on the 4th floor of Old Main. I went up there to look at all of the displays and they were really cool! Each one was so detailed! I wish I could have taken some pictures to post but I never have my camera when I need it. I did find some cool pictures online though! Cool pictures from Day of the Dead!

Enchiladas!

Me gusta enchiladas! It was my turn to cook dinner last night so I decided to make some homemade enchiladas. My favorite kind are with sour cream and chicken. I didn't have a recipe so I googled it. This enchilada recipe is the one I used. They turned out really good too! Mis compañeros estaban impresionados!
This recipe wasn't as good as my sister's recipe but they were pretty simple to make!

Marijuana Bust!

Esta incautación de droga era enorme! The drug bust happened yesterday when authorities were called to a shoot out that happened in a neighborhood. The marijuana weighed in at 134.2 tons and had a street value around 340 million. This is under investigation but is said this might have been one of the largest drug cartels in Mexico City and is being called a "historic seizure." Hopefully these kind of drug bust will continue and all the drug cartel problems will be finished. Drug Bust

World's Biggest Enchilada

¿cómo ir sobre la fabricación de grandes enchiladas del mundo? With a lot of ingredients! The town of Iztapalapa in Mexico is now famous for making the world's largest enchilada coming in at 230 ft long and weighing almost 1 1/2 tons! Guinness Book of World Records recorded it and is adding to their book. This town has a high level of tourism so things such as this just bring in more people. Big Enchilada

Happy Ending for the Chilean Miners!

Es hora de celebrar! All 33 miners that were trapped underground made it safely out! It took just a little under 24 hours to successfully pull each miner out one by one. One day these men were hard at work when the mine caved in and now they have reached celebrity status. There has even been talk about movie and book deals. It was nothing short of a miracle that every man made it out alive with little health problems. I'm pretty sure there was a higher power involved!  Miners Celebrate!

Chile miners get rescued

After spending 2 months underground, the miners from Chile will be rescued. They have built a drill that will be used to extract the miners. There is a cage built on for the miners to get into and be pulled up. I can't even imagine how that would be!! Spending 2 months underground sounds insane! A paramedic and phycologist will go down into the mine and check the miners to see who needs to go up first and so on. The plan is to have helicopters take the miners to a nearby city so they can seek the needed medical treatment. Chile debe ser feliz! Miners

Flooding rains in Mexico

Las fuertes lluvias han inundado muchas casas. Because of the continuous rain in this area of Mexico 15,000 people were supposed to be evacuated while only 7,000 were willing to leave. Many of the homeowners didn't want to leave for risk of losing their home or getting their things stolen. I can't even imagine having that much rain at one time let alone enough to actually flood anything. That is a really good reason to live no where close a big body of water, or any body of water for that matter, that could possibly flood. I don't think I would do very well in a natural disaster...but who would? Flooding in Mexico

Acapulco Kidnapping

There was a group of men traveling together in Acapulco when they got kidnapped by a gang of men who loaded them up into three cars a drove them away. The kidnapping was reported by one of the men who left the group to run an errand and when he returned his group was no where to be found. Though the motive is unknown as to why this particular group of men was kidnapped, Acapulco was once a high traffic area in the drug wars. Hopefully these men will returned safely. Es difícil decir lo que sucederá después. Acapulco Kidnapping

The death toll from the mudslides has risen to 36 fatalities. The area has been devastated with continuous rain and possibilities of more mudslides to come. Just this year the number of weather related deaths in the area has risen to 131 fatalities. This part of Mexico has also had 810,000 people lose their homes due to bad weather. The rains have flooded valleys, homes, historic landmarks, and numerous other things in the region. algunos dicen que los deslizamientos de tierra se deben a la deforestación. If you watch headline news or any news you have probably heard about the mudslides in Mexico. The town I read about had just suffered through a hurricane and a tropical storm. Now it suffered through a mudslide. Ahora el número de muertos es hasta el 23 con 9 personas siguen desaparecidas. I can't even imagine going through one of those disasters let alone all three! Here is the link to the story if you would like to read more about it. Mudslide News Link

Mexican Independance Day

I was reading earlier about the Mexican Independance Day that is celebrated on the 16th of September every year and the types of activities that they do on that day. It was pretty interesting to read about. This year they celebrated 200 years of Independance from Spanish rule. También celebró 100 años de su revolución. That revolution started in 1910 when they took down Porfirio Diaz.

Weather in Cozumel

My parents went to Cozumel for their anniversary this weekend. Apparently the weather has been good, but a little stormy. The times I've been to Cozumel the weather has been muy bien! They said there aren't many tourist there at this time of year so it has been a good vacation. I wish I could be there even if the weather is questionable.

Espanol and the Doctor

I went to the doctor at 9:00 yesterday morning and I told him I was trying to learn Spanish. He asked if I knew any medical terms yet. Surprisingly I did know some. So I told him, "Me duele mi pie." He was quite impressed that I actually knew something in Spanish. But actually I wasn't even sure if I said it right...either way it worked out.
